Hi...
I’m new here. I’m a room attendant – what may have been known in the past as a 'chambermaid' – but basically, a cleaner.
I work in the Housekeeping department of a luxury Four Star hotel in London made up of 350 bedrooms for the rich, the even richer, and people who managed to get cheap internet deals.
I'm expected to clean 16 rooms in a 7.5 hour day with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break that goes in the blink of an eye. That's 20 minutes to: change a double (or Queen or Kingsize) bed, perfectly plump and press four pillows, dust two bedside tables, pictures, a desk, an office chair, a table, clean a hospitality tray and replace tea, coffee, milk, sugar and cookies, wipe and 'mop' a bathroom (with a floor duster), wash any dirty cups or glasses, replace soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, fold all towels and bath matt, wash a sink and bath/shower and toilet, polish all chrome and hoover everywhere.
Right.
The housekeeping department is all women save for a couple of supervisors and around four young male laundry porters. We're a workforce of around 45 and we're Indian, Nigerian, Sri Lankan, Italian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish, Lithuanian, Czech and Latvian. Around 35 of us clean at least 10 rooms per day, covering the entire, five floor, 350 room hotel.
The first three days are training - shadowing and working with a long-term worker.
I had my first day today, trained by a twentysomething Indian woman – Adhira* - who literally seemed to dance around the bed, the room and bathroom spraying, tucking, smoothing, straightening, hoovering and wiping.
It's also pretty hard to keep up when half, literally, half of all the bedding we're putting down is marked in some way and needs to be taken off and replaced again, and when your hoover's held together with gaffer tape and the end keeps falling off, it's pretty stressful. But, you have to go 'Faster, faster, faster....
*All workers' names will be kept confidential
Excellent blog, I've enjoyed reading it as I can relate to everything you're saying. I did a stint as a room attendant and it was so physically exhausting, and I suffered a lot of pain: backaches and numbness and shooting pains up my arms. I didn't last long as I wasn't deemed 'fast enough'. I wish you the best of luck organising a union, which is much needed. Such work should be much better paid. These days, with high unemployment, underemployment and workfare, these employers really are taking the piss and exploiting people.

DeleteSchwarzenegger has been involved with the Special Olympics for many years after they were founded in 1968 by his later mother-in-law Eunice Kennedy Shriver.[278] In 2007, Schwarzenegger was the official spokesperson for the Special Olympics held in Shanghai, China.[279] Schwarzenegger believes that quality school opportunities should be made available to children who might not normally be able to access them.[280] In 1995, he founded the Inner City Games Foundation (ICG) which provides cultural, educational and community enrichment programming to youth. ICG is active in 15 cities around the country and serves over 250,000 children in over 400 schools countrywide.[280] He has also been involved with After-School All-Stars and founded the Los Angeles branch in 2002.[281] ASAS is an after school program provider, educating youth about health, fitness and nutrition.
DeleteThe Special Olympics World Games is a major event put on by the Special Olympics committee. The World Games generally alternate between summer and winter games, in two-year cycles, recurring every fourth year. The games were first held on July 20, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, United States, with about 1,000 athletes from the U.S. and Canada. At those first games, honorary event chair Eunice Kennedy Shriver announced the formation of the Special Olympics organization. International participation expanded in subsequent games. In 2003, the first summer games held outside the United States were in Dublin, Ireland, with 7000 athletes from 150 countries. The most recent Summer Games were hosted in Berlin, Germany, between June 16 to 25, 2023.[4]
DeleteAlso in the early 1960s, Kennedy Shriver wrote an article in the Saturday Evening Post, stating that her sister, also President John F. Kennedy's sister, was born with intellectual disabilities.[10] Her sister, Rosemary Kennedy was slow to learn, suffered seizures and mood swings. Her mother was told by doctors that Rosemary's situation was hopeless. In the early 1940s, Rosemary was prescribed a lobotomy, which left her incapacitated.[11] This frank article about the President's family was seen as a "watershed" in changing public attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities.[12] Rosemary's disability provided Kennedy Shriver with an overall vision that people with intellectual disabilities could compete and at the same time unify together in public.[13] It has often been said that Rosemary's disability was Eunice's inspiration to form Special Olympics (as the movement came to be called); Eunice told The New York Times in 1995 that that was not exactly the case. "The games should not focus on one individual," she said.[14]
The 1964 research of Dr. Frank Hayden, a Canadian physical education professor from London, Ontario, demonstrated that intellectually disabled people can and should participate in physical exercise. He believed that the benefits of such activity would be seen in all areas of the athletes' lives.[18] With the help of a local school that offered space in its gym, Hayden started one of the first public organised sports programs, floor hockey for individuals with intellectual disabilities, in the fall of 1968.[19] In the mid-1960s, Hayden also developed an idea for national games, and his work brought him to the attention of the Kennedy Foundation. He shared his ideas for national games, while taking a teaching sabbatical and working for the foundation.[20]
In May 2016, Mary Davis of Dublin, Ireland, was named chief executive officer. She is the first CEO from outside the U.S. in the organization's history.[33] From 2017 to 2019, US secretary of education Betsy DeVos attempted to eliminate federal funding for the Special Olympics. Each year the attempt was rejected by Congress, and the public outcry following a third annual attempt resulted in the funding being maintained in 2019.[34] As part of the Special Olympics 50th Anniversary celebration in 2018, a new mission called the "Inclusion Revolution" was launched.[35]
As part of their 50th anniversary, the Special Olympics created the first Unified Cup.[70] The first competition is a soccer tournament with 440 athletes from 24 countries.[71][72]
DeleteUnified Robotics, a program that pairs Special Olympics students with FIRST Robotics students to build robots, began in 2016, and has been bringing opportunities for technological skill development to Special Olympics students in Washington state, Arizona, and in other regions since. Special Olympics Arizona also promotes inclusion through Unified Arts programming including robotics, music, photography, art competitions, and gardening.[73]

DeleteFor the show's final season, Nickelodeon turned Guts into Global Guts, featuring competitors from various countries, namely the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, Israel, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (referred to simply as "C.I.S." on air, consisting of Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine). Although each country had multiple contestants, no country was ever represented twice in a single episode, except for the Special Olympic episode, which featured two U.S. contestants. Each country had its own team of broadcasters, with O'Malley retained this role for the US broadcast and Quirk retained her officiating role. The format remained identical to the original version, but the Mega Crag was upgraded to the Super Aggro Crag. In the "Spill Your GUTS" segments, non-English-speaking contestants spoke in their own language, with an interpreter speaking over their lines.

ReplyDeleteI had the exact same experience in this field. At first I thought maybe they made a mistake on the price, but quickly realized they were serious. They expected me to clean a boatload of rooms for next to nothing. That was not even the worst part, they had a list of rules and regulations that would have taken me a week to read!

DeleteThe 2016 episode "Nosedive" presents a society in which citizens rate interactions with each other from one to five stars and receive an overall rating that largely determines their socioeconomic status. This has been compared to China's Social Credit System, where local governments collect data on citizens to assign them an overall score.[236] Example data points include publicly criticising the government, defaulting on a loan or having high-rated friends.[237][238] Like the system in "Nosedive", a low score can limit a person's access to transport.[239][240] "Be Right Back" shows an artificial intelligence technology designed to mimic a deceased loved one. Chatbots with similar functionality and personalisation have been compared to this premise, as has a 2022 announcement that a future Amazon Alexa feature will imitate voices of dead loved ones.[241] "Shut Up and Dance" is about a man who is blackmailed after footage of him masturbating is recorded through his webcam. Computer viruses can allow for covert recording through an unsuspecting person's webcam, and similar real-life blackmail has been reported.[236]
